I did the CapTexTri on Memorial Day. It was my first Sprint distance triathlon, though I did 3 shorter distance tris last summer. I was hoping to have done better, finished faster, competed harder, etc., but the open water 1/2 mile swim in Town Lake just destroyed me and my race. I got out in the water and panicked. I can swim 1/2 mile easily now, and I did a pleasant 1/2 mile open water swim a couple weeks ago as practice, but I guess nothing is the same as race day. It was absolutely awful, I nearly quit, I nearly cried, I don’t know what happened. I won’t go into the gruesome details, especially as no one reads this, but I basically floated and gasped my way through the swim, which completely drained me of any competitiveness and all energy for the rest of the race, which meant my bike and run were slower than I wanted. Jessica saw me transitioning between the swim and the bike and she could tell I was upset and my race was already over. I basically went through the motions for the rest of the race.
There’s so much more I could write, but I’m tired of …. well, I’m tried of lots of things, so I’ll just end it here. So much for “just having fun”.
