Perspective and Wilke

by dv August 8, 2006 2 Comments

So I was slightly disappointed in finishing third at Blanco, but I was also pretty happy about finishing third at Blanco. Which is about right. Because on Sunday, I went over to my mom’s house and my sister, who was visiting from Houston, asks me about the tri and I tell her I finished third. She then asks, “So you got passed at the end?” Well thanks for believing in me sis. And for the record, no I didn’t get passed. I guess she asked that because Jessica told her I was going to win. Then, on Monday, I see that Patrick Evoe, whom I run far behind in Gilbert’s T/Th morning group, won a 70.3 triathlon on Saturday. Congratulations to Patrick, but it’s another perspective-builder for me. Moving on…..

I was back with the Gazelles this morning after taking last week off to do my own thing (didn’t want the inevitable pain of circuit and tempo to hurt my race). Lucky me, today was the infamous Wilke routine. Gilbert embarrassed me before the workout: “Congrats to Pat Evoe who won a half-ironman and came from 3 minutes behind on the run to win …. and David finished third at his teeny tiny race.” Anyway, seven trips up forward, three up backwards and three sprints at the top. My legs seemed a little lackadaisical on the run over from Robert E. Lee, but I actually felt really strong on the hill. I even remarked to Andre that Wilke seemed to be getting easier than in past workouts. Afterwards though, Gilbert stopped me and said “you really need to work on your core. Nothing but core. Your back is all over the place.” So I’ll try to get some clarification on that and work it in somehow. At any rate, it was nice to be back with the group.

Congratulations on the big race. Seriously, great job. I think you’ve got some natural talent and it’s obvious you’re going to keep getting better with time.

Teeny Tiny or not, there aren’t that many people (even Gazelles) who could come in 3rd overall in a triathlon (and possible could have won if they’d been in the same wave as the competition). Don’t let anyone burst your bubble…it was *very* much hard-earned. I know. I see your commitment.

Maybe you should add superman to your evening core ritual…lol.
