Just a short status update on my running quest. Still running, added some track workouts and fast-finish long runs. Goal of a sub-20 minute 5k at 50 years old is still there, just taking it slow.
I’ve been averaging about 30-35 miles per week, running six days and taking every Friday off, while lowering mileage to 20ish every fourth week. I feel stronger, even had a sub-7 mile at the end of a long run the other day. I know that’s nothing to blog about, but for some reason I’ve had trouble hitting that benchmark, so it helped psychologically at least.
I really wish I had a group to run with. I think I might try to find a runninging club (pandemic allowing) or a coach to get me through the winter. I’m a little apprehensive that I’ll lose a lot of fitness. It’s tough to run when the days are short, the dark is long, and the cold is biting. Plus I hope to snowboard as much as possible, so I’ll need to work out how to fit my running in to the snow sports and around the snow bound.
My 49th birthday is this month, and I plan on running a 5K time trial to celebrate and gauge any progress, so look for a video about that towards the end of the month. I’m probably somewhere under 22 minute shape, 21:30 would be top end right now and make me ecstatic. It’ll be tough, though, hitting any sort of time during a solo time trial, they’re just not the same as a race. The last time trial I ran in July I quit after two miles and beat myself up for a week. Fingers crossed next time goes better.
Wanna come run with me?
