Running, writing, and YouTubing

by dv January 30, 2022 No Comments

The technology focused entries on this blog are far and way the most popular, but they often feel too close to “work”, so I prefer writing about my running. Which no one cares about. No, that’s not true, or didn’t used to be. Back when Knob was humming, and I was fast, my running blog had a pretty good following. But one day I ceased running, ceased writing, and, well, my reading public left and never came back.

Some of you may recall that I started a video series on YouTube last year, chronicling my attempt to run a sub-20 minute 5k when I turned 50 years old. Well, that lasted 5 episodes, I turned 50, and I haven’t run sub-20 yet. But I’ve still been running, and lately it’s been going well, I’m feeling fitter and healthier than I have in a long time, I just haven’t blogged or vlogged or socialed about it.

There are several reasons for that. First, it’s time consuming and tedious to produce content every week, whether written or filmed. Second, I’m not the most outgoing person, and sharing my little slice of life always seems self-indulgent, and honestly, goes against my very private nature. Third, I’m not a very good filmmaker, but am a competent writer, so there was always this tension in my mind between creating videos (which most people seem to prefer), and writing blog entries, which seems dated and unpopular. So I did neither.

It’s time to change that. Again. I’m inspired to produce content. Again. So this is my public declaration of my return to publishing. Again.

Why now? Why again? Because I’m running well. And when I’m running well, I feel inspired and want to share. I don’t listen to music or podcasts when I run, I just like to think. And what I think about is often ideas for blogs or videos or social media. Because of my nature, those thoughts almost never end up outside of my head, but they’re there, and maybe now they’ve reached critical mass. So we’ll see.

Hopefully this isn’t just another dying quail of an attempt at content that will fall short after a few weeks. And one way I can make it sustainable is to make it as easy as possible for me to create and publish. So I have some ideas about that which I’ll hopefully refine and share in future installments.

Until then, it’s good to be back, and I hope you’ll stay with me to see where this takes us.
