I said I might take 4 days off. Jessica said “Do it.” I didn’t listen.
I took Friday off from training. Saturday there was a family mix-up and we both missed the Gazelles morning long run/stretching routine, so I tried to make it up with a snappy little 4 mile jaunt and 1K swim around lunch time. I didn’t feel too fabulous on the run, but it wasn’t catastrophic like last week. Sunday we took the boys with us to Blanco to meet some friends, check out the river and ride the Outback course. My friends Rich and Marc (and Jessica and Marc’s wife and several other friends) are doing the mini-tri too and we had a great ride over the undulating course. There’s an especially voluptuous hill beyond where the course makes its turnaround. I was in my last gear, out of the saddle, and once at the top, we wanted to ride it again. Loved that little ride with friends.
Today, for our little water bomb run, Steve put together an alternative route to our normal run on the trail. Check out the elevation graphic on that link. That first hill was a slap in the face at 6:15 in the morning but we were taking it slow and it was good work. Steve said the route “offered a lightning fast finish” but I wasn’t feeling it. The group got separated, some of the leaders took a wrong turn, and I ran the last 4 miles or so by myself. I tried to push it as well as I could, and when Steve caught me (he had stayed back with another runner) with about 400 meters to go I tried to stay with him and John to the end. I think Steve’s watch said 61 minutes for the 8 miles. Barton Springs provided a nice end.
So that was my time off. What did you do?
